Forum: The Evolution of Justice
January 26 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
“I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends towards justice.” – Unitarian minister and abolitionist Theodore Parker
As UU Pagans, we have a unique vantage point on justice: we look back to the stories and lives of societies in the distant past, but we also look forward into a future that can only be divined by conscience. We cannot wholly transplant our ancestors’ ideas of justice and right-doing from the past into our present, but are there elements of justice that we can bring forward and renew? Likewise, we cannot expect our current sense of what is just to remain exactly as it is and still carry us into the hoped-for future. How does the idea of justice change with time and new understanding? How can we change with it?
