This Sunday: Bardic Circle

Join us this Sunday for a virtual bardic circle! We’ll spin tales, sing songs, and share poetry with each other. Our suggested theme is art about the current God Auction candidates (Freyr, Isis, Spider Woman, Old Possum, Artemis, Hermes, Weyland the Smith).Even if you won’t be sharing, please still attend; an appreciative audience is a bard’s best friend.

This Sunday: Earth Day!

Earth Day this year takes place in a time of uncertainty, but one thing is certain: our current lower impact on the environment is visible. Mother Earth has given us a time out, and taking a moment to clean up after us, her unruly children.

This Sunday, we will explore areas of climate change and human environmental impact that don’t get much publicity. We’ll take some time to do direct action, and/or make oaths.  Before the ritual, a guide will be posted on the Facebook group with actions you can take during the work of the day or later.

For this ritual, you are encouraged to go outside, if your tech allows it, and the weather cooperates. Otherwise, if you can set-up near a window, that would be best. There are a few items that will aid your participation: a chalice, matches/lighter/firestick, and a bowl of sun-warmed water with salt if sunlight isn’t available.

This Sunday: Climate Activism in the Time of COVID-19

How has the movement for climate action and climate justice adapted to the locked-down world of coronavirus response? How have our behavior changes affected the natural world? In this class, we’ll learn about current developments and opportunities to act.

Please join us for social time beginning at 3 pm and class beginning at 4.

This Sunday: Ritual – Horus the Redeemer

We call on Horus this Sunday as a force for protection, as the champion who rescued and redeemed his father Osiris from unending death. As the country reels from the continuing spread of the novel coronavirus, we invoke and make offering to Horus, asking him to spread his wings over our congregation and over the world that looks for order, for protection, for shelter from the storm. For the time being, our rituals and other events will be held on Zoom: Gaia’s Zoom link for this ritual is https://zoom.us/j/4449994327?pwd=NHRHUmlvZUNsdjZiSGluRjBPaTEvdz09 or you can enter the meeting ID if you’ve already downloaded the software: Gaia’s is 444-999-4327 – zoom has implemented mandatory passwords so you’ll also need to enter 195272 if you do it this way. You may find the following items useful to participate more fully in ritual:
* a candle or chalice (and a way to light it)
* a bowl of clear water, with salt and baking soda if you have them, but clean water is fine
* a cloth for drying your hands
* if you have the ability to do so, you may wish to print the Eye of Horus, https://duckduckgo.com/?q=eye+of+horus&ia=images&iax=images

In-person events temporarily suspended

Friends, in order to better care for each other, Gaia Community will not meet in person for the immediate future. Gaia is a point of connection for many of us in the Kansas City area and beyond, and now is a time when connection feels more precious than ever. So that we can preserve and strengthen that connection as best we can, we are working on a way to share services online.

This includes all meetings, rituals, and upcoming events like the Blue River Rescue.

We will be primarily using Zoom to host our virtual gatherings – login instructions will be posted with each event, and you can click here for general information about using Zoom. We look forward to seeing you!

12/15 Services canceled due to weather

The weather outside is frightful… as our friends the ancient Egyptians might have said (if they’d had to deal with snow), “As you love life and hate death:” don’t get on the roads today. We’ll reschedule this class as soon as possible. Stay safe and warm!

Trivia Night 12/20!

Poster for trivia night event

Please join us for Gaia’s first-ever trivia night! We’ve got a pub quiz-style trivia game full of weird facts about paganism and the solstice season, and we think it’s going to be a lot of fun. Teams of up to 6 players (build your team before the game, or meet brand new friends and teammates at the event) will compete for silly and fabulous prizes. $10 to play, $5 for current Gaia members. Snacks and beverages will be available throughout (donations requested).

Gaia Community Supports Medicare for All

At a recent Ritual for Business, the Committee of the Whole of Gaia Community adopted a resolution in support of the Medicare for All Act of 2019. Our support for this legislation follows decades of advocacy within our community and the Unitarian Universalist Association at large in favor of universal health care in the United States. We believe that health care is a human right, and hope that this Act will set us on the road to securing that right. The full text of our resolution follows.

Resolution in Support of the Medicare for All Act of 2019

WHEREAS, Gaia Community is a Kansas City Unitarian Universalist congregation and is concerned about the well-being of our members and the greater Kansas City community, and

WHEREAS, Unitarian Universalism is committed to the inherent worth and dignity of every person; justice, equity and compassion in human relations; and the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large, and

A new patron arrives!

Falcon-headed Horus carving, from his temple at Edfu in Egypt.

In July, Gaia Community selected Horus as our patron of the year. Now, we begin to learn more about this deity and how to work with and honor him. On August 18, we will set up a shrine box in Horus’ honor and formally welcome him to the community in this role. If you’d like to add something to Horus’ shrine, please bring it with you to ritual on the 18th, or to any Sunday service thereafter. Keep an eye on the website or our Facebook group to learn more about how things are going!
